Members of the Alumni Association Executive Board are chosen by their peers as leaders and examples of the URI alumni body. Board members work in cooperation with the President, the Executive Director, University administration, fellow board members, and fellow alumni.
The role of a board member is to serve as a leader, role model, and representative of the University community. To do this effectively, board members must address themselves to the major problems and issues facing the University and be well-informed about those problems and issues.
The job of a member of the Alumni Association Executive Board is an important and responsible one. Members are expected to provide leadership, representation, and creative ideas. Members are elected, not only because of their willingness to serve but because of their ability to come up with creative approaches and to serve as respected representatives of the Alumni Association and the University.
Board members have specific legal and fiscal responsibilities to the association. Members of the board can be held individually or collectively liable if someone decides to challenge the legality of an association action. Members should be aware of their responsibilities, knowledgeable about the operations of the association, and thoroughly familiar with the by-laws and mission statement of the association.
While each of us have our own personal interests and beliefs, board members are responsible for considering the needs of the alumni body and working on behalf of the University. It is also important for board members to be well informed about the issues and to conduct themselves with the understanding that any statements they make about the association or the University carry the weight of their position.
