Coastal Institute, Kingston Campus The new Coastal Institute building on the Kingston Campus opened in September 2001. The 50,000-square-foot, three-story building is located on Greenhouse Road, beside the Biological Sciences Center. The facility is the home of the College of Environment and Life Sciences and provides office and laboratory facilities devoted to research, service, and instruction on marine and environmental issues. The building also features a state-of-the-art environmental policy simulation laboratory. Cost: $8.1 million.

Social Sciences Center A new research wing at the University’s acclaimed Cancer Prevention Research Center opened in March 2000. The new two-story, 10,000 square-foot addition doubled the size of the facility, adding much-needed office, computer, meeting, and work space for this acclaimed research center. Cost: $1.4 million.

Ocean Technology Center The Ocean Technology Center at the University’s Narragansett Bay Campus opened in 1998. The 9,500 square foot facility houses the Archaeological Oceanography program and the Equipment Development Laboratory where new oceanographic research devices are created. Cost: $1.25 million.

Coastal Institute: A view of the future Overlooking the West Passage of Narragansett Bay, the Coastal Institute on Narragansett Bay was funded with a $7 million bond issue that was approved by R.I. voters in 1990. Dedicated in 1996, the 38,000-square-foot, four-story building was completed on time and on budget. The facility was the first of three Coastal Institute buildings to be built—two on the University’s Narragansett Bay Campus and one in Kingston. The two other facilities were funded with more than $12.5 million from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Cost: $7 million.
