Capital Improvements Timeline 1994 – 2004
1994
Campaign. The University embarked on its first-ever $50 million Capital Campaign.
Coastal Institute groundbreaking, Narragansett Bay Campus.
Memorial Union. Completed in October, this $5.3 million renovation project added 20,000-square-feet, and updated key areas for student activity.
1995
Chester H. Kirk Center for Advanced Technology groundbreaking. Funded by a combination of public and private sources.
1996
Providence Campus. The historic Shepard Building in downtown Providence became the University’s new Providence home in January after a $35 million restoration project.
Coastal Institute on Narragansett Bay completed in July.
Chester H. Kirk Center for Advanced Technology completed.
Health Services. A $1.4 million expansion and renovation completed.
Helene Lewis Cytopathology Laboratory dedication.
Medicinal Gardens dedicated to former Pharmacy Dean Heber Youngken.
Residence Hall upgrades, Phase I completed in August.
Voters approve funding for high technology and capital improvements.
1997
Capital Campaign Finale. Campaign raised more than $67 million.
Groundbreaking for Coastal Institute building in Kingston.
Ballentine Hall. Campaign announced to leverage funds from the 1996 general revenue bond to expand Ballentine.
85 Briar Lane facility renovated to house President’s Health Promotion Partnership project.
Technology Initiative. Wiring in residence halls complete.
1998
Fine Arts Center Recital Hall renovation completed.
Fine Arts Center music and art computer labs completed.
Multicultural Center completed in June.
Ocean Technology Center completed in June.
Central Steam Plant replacement planning underway.
Green Hall. Campaign announced to leverage funds from the 1996 general revenue bond to restore Green.
1999
Coastal Institute, Kingston, completed.
International Engineering Program opens first IEP House on Upper College Road.
2000
Social Science Research Center expansion completed in March.
210 Flagg Rd (Surge Building Phase I ) completed and occupied by College of Business.
Steam plant renovation completed.
Campus Master Plans for the Kingston and Narragansett Bay campuses completed.
2001
Weldin Hall (Jan.) and Bressler Hall (Sept.) renovations completed.
Admissions Office moves to 14 Upper College Road, former Theta Chi Fraternity sold to URI, renamed Newman Hall.
URI Foundation building completed.
2002
Bradford R. Boss Ice Arena opens, dedication in September.
Bressler and Butterfield Hall renovations completed.
Thomas M. Ryan Center opened in June.
Ranger Hall building envelope completed.
2003
Green Hall re-opens. Dedication in May.
Ballentine Hall re-opens. Dedication in June.
Women’s Center moves to former Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity renovated on Upper College Rd. Center includes living space for women students majoring in sciences.
North District Campus Master Plan completed.
Browning and Adams Halls renovation completed.
Alumni Center construction begins.
2004
Aquaculture Laboratory, Narragansett Bay Campus.
210 Flagg Rd, second level (Surge Bldg Phase II) begins construction.
New student housing. Design of 800 new apartment and suite beds begins.
Heathman Hall renovation designed for January 2005 start.
Major utilities upgrades on the Kingston Campus completed.
