Marlene Dufault, professor of nursing, was honored last fall by The American Cancer Society and the Rhode Island Cancer Pain Initiative for her research on pain management. She was among three health care professionals recognized during the 21st Century Pain Management Program in Warwick. Dufault recently completed a pain management study that directly affected patients in home care agencies in South County, Providence and Woonsocket.

Maria Garrido, adjunct professor of psychology, chaired “Latino Psychology 2002: Bridging Our Diversity and Our Communities,” a three-day conference sponsored by URI’s Psychology Department, Multicultural Center, and the R.I. Psychological Association. The event provided a forum for 220 Latino mental health scholars, graduate students, and practitioners from across the country.

Nir Kshetri, a doctoral candidate in marketing and e-commerce in the College of Business Administration, had his prize-winning essay “What Determines Internet Diffusion Loci in Developing Countries: Evidence from China and India,” published in Pacific Telecommunications Review. Kshetri was awarded $2000 cash and $1500 toward travel reimbursement to present his paper. He also won the 2001 Association for Consumer Research/Sheth Foundation Dissertation Award for “best cross-cultural research dissertation proposal” and was awarded a cash prize of $3,000.

Linda Welters, professor of textiles, fashion merchandising and design, has been selected the 2002 International Textile and Apparel Association Distinguished Scholar Lecturer. The Distinguished Scholar Lecture Series was established to acknowledge members who have conducted outstanding research and to increase the knowledge of graduate students and faculty members of special topics. Welters received the award and an honorarium of $500 in New York, where she also made a presentation on “Material Culture: Textiles in Women’s Lives.”

Diane M. Horm, professor of human development and family studies and associate dean of the College of Human Science and Services, was recently elected to the governing board of the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators. The association represents nearly 700 early childhood teacher educators worldwide.

Ruth Waldman, associate dean of the College of Nursing, received a Distinguished Alumna Award from the School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The award was presented in October on Alumni Day. Waldman was honored with a plaque for her lifetime contributions to nursing and nursing education.

Christopher Nerone, a lab technician in the Biological Sciences Department, was presented with the Rhode Island State Award from the New England Wild Flower Society for his dedication to conserving and protecting wild flowers.

Track and field coach John A. Copeland was inducted into the North Haven (Conn.) High School Sports Hall of Fame during ceremonies in early November. Copeland coached URI to its second straight indoor track Atlantic 10 championship last winter and its second straight A-10 outdoor championship last spring. A 1963 graduate of North Haven High School, Copeland lettered in basketball and track.

Lauren Anderson, associate director of athletics and senior women’s sports administrator, was named to the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Anderson is URI’s former cross country, indoor and outdoor track coach. A graduate of Woodstock Academy and Southern Connecticut State University, she was track coach and athletic director at North Haven High School, where her teams won four consecutive state girls’ outdoor track titles.
