Giuliani to deliver U.S. Scholar-Athlete Games keynote address

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani will deliver the keynote address at the United States Scholar-Athlete Games at the University of Rhode Island on June 26. While on campus, Giuliani will be presented with an honorary degree by URI President Robert L. Carothers.

Administered by the Institute for International Sport at URI, the U.S. Scholar-Athlete Games will welcome 1,500 scholar-athletes and scholar-artists from all 50 states in an eight-day program of sports, cultural and leadership activities. The 1,500 participants will be selected from approximately 20,000 nominees.

Giuliani will deliver the keynote address in The Ryan Center at 7:30 p.m. The audience will include more than 3,500 scholar-athletes, coaches and volunteers. A limited number of tickets to Giuliani’s speech will be made available to the general public. These tickets will go on sale in April through the Ryan Center box office, Ticketmaster and the Institute for International Sport.

Institute for International Sport founder and Executive Director Dan Doyle, who conceived the Scholar-Athlete Games, said, “There is no better person in America to address our great group of scholar-athletes and scholar-artists than Mayor Giuliani. We are delighted he has accepted our invitation to deliver the 2003 United States Scholar-Athlete Games keynote address. His message of leadership is exactly what we want the participants to hear.”

“We are thrilled that Mayor Giuliani will visit our campus and be part of an extraordinary event, the United States Scholar-Athlete Games. We are also extremely pleased to be presenting him with a much deserved honorary degree,” said Carothers.
