Martin Luther King Week Activities

The Multicultural Center, the Office of the Chaplains, the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies, and the Great Performances Series are working together to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jan. 28-Feb. 1, 2002. For additional information, call 401-874-5829. Events to be held include:

• Philadanco performance (see below)

• Town Meeting: “Our Response to the Tragedy of September 11th 2001 Nonviolence or Violence?” with Professors Kailash Mohapatra, Political Science; Tom Morin, Languages; Marc Genest, Political Science; and Lynn Derbyshire, Communication Studies. Tuesday Jan. 29, 7 p.m. at the Catholic Student Center.

• Unity Lunch, featuring readings of the URI’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest winners. Wednesday, Jan. 30, Noon-1:30 p.m., Multicultural Center, Hardge Forum

• Civil Rights Sing-a-long with Communication Studies Professor Stephen Wood, Stephen Myles of the Counseling Center; and Psychology Professor Paul DeMesqiuta. Thursday, Jan. 31, Noon-1 p.m., Multicultural Center, Hardge Forum.

• Peace and Harmony Meditation with Dr. Celina Pereira and Laurie Johnson, Health Services. Friday, Feb. 1, Noon-1 p.m., Multicultural Center, Hardge Forum.

Great Performances brings Messages from the Heart

URI’s Great Performances Series starts the spring semester with Messages from the Heart by the Philadelphia Dance Company, aka Philadanco, an ensemble of multiethnic dancers known for their innovative choreography that fuses ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and West-African influences. The performance will held on Monday, Jan. 28. at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center’s, Will Theatre. Tickets are $20 for general audiences, $15 staff, $12 seniors; and $5 students. Eighth Annual Lecture on Multiculturalism

Noted Civil Rights Activist and creator of the highly acclaimed Algebra Project, Robert Parris (Bob) Moses, will deliver the University of Rhode Island’s Eighth Annual Lecture on Multiculturalism on Monday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Auditorium. Free and open to the public, Moses will address the topic “Civil Rights, Human Rights, and Multiculturalism.” For more information, call 874-5829.
