Will Green, associate professor of community planning and landscape architecture, and his senior design students received the annual Honor Award from the Rhode Island chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for their work designing an urban trail for the City of Newport.

Riyaz Mahammad, a postdoctoral student in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, won the Neurotoxicology Postdoctoral Award at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Toxicology for his presentation about “PCB-Induced Changes in the DNA-binding of Several Transcription Factors in Developing Brain.” He received a similar award from the Society in 2001.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education recognized James W. Leslie, former executive director of the URI Foundation and URI vice president emeritus, with the 2002 CASE Commonfund Service Award.

Community Planning graduate student Emaly Bryson was one of 15 students in the world chosen to participate in the EDAW, Inc. Summer Student Program, the most prestigious community planning internship in the country.

Arun Shukla, interim dean of the College of Engineering and the Simon Ostrach Professor of Mechanical Engineering, was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics.

Marine Affairs graduate student Braxton Davis won the award for best student paper at the national conference of The Coastal Society for his paper “A National Inventory of Special Management Areas in the Coastal Zone.” Fellow graduate student Nicole Hade received honorable mention.

College of Business doctoral candidate Nir Kshetri was the first place winner in the Pacific Telecommunications Council Essay Competition with his essay titled “What Determines Internet Diffusion Loci in Developing Countries.” He also won the dissertation award from the Association for Consumer Research/Sheth Foundation for the best cross-cultural research dissertation proposal.

Debby Brown, assistant professor of nursing, has been appointed to the Rhode Island Board of Nursing, which oversees licensing and regulations issues and proposes policy changes for nursing practice throughout the state.
