
In memoriamThomas Meade, 81, professor emeritus of fisheries and aquaculture, died May 30. He was instrumental in establishing the aquaculture and fisheries program at URI and served as its chairman for ten years. A resident of South Kingstown, he was elected to the College of Resource Development’s Hall of Fame in 1993. A longtime member of the American Oil Chemists Society, he was awarded several patents for dietary products and processes involving fats and lipids.
Robert Aukerman, 92, professor emeritus of education, died at his home in Kingston on June 1. He served as director of the Summer Session beginning in 1954, initiated the University’s first courses in elementary education and reading methods, organized the graduate program in reading, and directed an annual reading conference for 12 years. The author of five books on reading, he served as president of the College Reading Association and was founder and editor of the New England Reading Association Journal.
