Carothers receives awards honoring leadershipUniversity of Rhode Island President Robert L. Carothers has been honored by two organizations recently citing his leadership on diversity and humanitarian issues.
On Thursday, May 11, 2000 at the Rhode Island Convention Center, Cong. Robert A. Weygand, D-R.I., presented Carothers with The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) Jean Hicks Award, for his efforts to "increase diversity at the University and for his ongoing commitment to fairness and inclusion."
On Wednesday, June 14, 2000, Carothers was also presented with the Humanitarian Award by the Urban League of Rhode Island, at its 61st Annual Dinner. The theme of this year's event was "Equalizing Access-It's a Community Affair."
During his 10 years as president, Carothers has become well known locally and regionally for his personal and professional commitment to increasing diversity at the University, and helping the community to embrace that diversity through open lines of communication. The University's tenth president, Carothers received his bachelor's degree in English from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, his doctoral degree in English from Kent State University and a Law degree from the University of Akron.
