
Concrete canoe team wins regional championshipCivil engineering students have built a dynasty by winning their sixth consecutive New England regional concrete canoe championship, held this year at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. URI's team competed against 11 other universities to earn a berth in the national championships at San Diego State University. The canoe, named Islander, is made of layers of concrete and glass microballoons reinforced by carbon fiber and fiberglass. The finished canoe is 17 feet long and weighs 98 pounds. The event is sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
