Carothers named a 'History Maker'

University of Rhode Island President Robert L. Carothers was honored as a 2001 History Maker by the Rhode Island Historical Society at its third annual History Makers Salute banquet in May. History Makers are outstanding citizens and public servants of Rhode Island who have made important contributions to the ongoing story of life in Rhode Island.

The Historical Society honored Carothers for leading URI into the new millennium, helping the University create master plans for development, strengthening university infrastructure and reinforcing a stimulating learning environment for students. The Historical Society also noted that Carothers' dedication to academic excellence helped spur an overall trend towards a healthier state university with a rise in grades and test scores of incoming freshmen, increased minority enrollment and the refurbishment and construction of campus facilities.

A powerful advocate for the University, Carothers has also helped raise millions of dollars in private support for higher education as well as new state and federal grants.

President Carothers is an active community leader serving on the boards of numerous civic and professional organizations including the Leadership Council of the American Council on Education, Bradley Hospital, Citizens Bank, The National Conference of Community and Justice, the Newport Music Festival, Grow Smart Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Economic Policy Council and the Rhode Island Philharmonic. Additionally, he serves on numerous advisory committees on drug and alcohol awareness, including the National Institute Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Other 2001 History Makers include: George Kent, founder and director of the Chorus of Westerly and URI professor of music; Joseph Le, co-founder and executive director of the Socio Economic Development Center for Southeast Asians; Ben Mondor, owner of the Pawtucket Red Sox; and Rose Weaver, a renowned actress and musician.

The Rhode Island Historical Society is a private, non-profit educational and cultural organization established in 1822 to collect, preserve and share Rhode Island's history.
