James Campbell, director of the Counseling Center, has received the Rhode Island Psychological Association’s Musiker-Merenda Award for “Significant Contributions to Mental Health.” Campbell was selected for his service to the state as director of the Red Cross Emergency Trauma Intervention Team. He was also recognized for his efforts to recruit and train other Rhode Island psychologists and mental health workers to become Red Cross certified, and for his role as a supervisor and mentor to psychologists in practice and in preparation.

Robin Devin, a professor at the University Library, has been elected a Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology.

Joy Emery, professor emeritus in the Department of Theatre, has been elected a Fellow of the Costume Society of America, its highest honor for professionals in the field.

H. Thomas Rossby, professor of oceanography, received the Walter Munk Award for Distinguished Research in Oceanography Related to Sound and the Sea in June. He was recognized for “creative and pioneering developments of acoustically tracked floats, inverted echo sounders and other ocean acoustic methodologies, their innovative application to measure and understand physical oceanographic processes, and for his unselfish and dedicated efforts to freely share those developments with the international oceanographic community.” The award is granted jointly by The Oceanography Society, the Office of Naval Research, and the Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy.

Barry Costa-Pierce, professor of fisheries and director of the Rhode Island Sea Grant Program, has co-edited the book Open Ocean Aquaculture: From Research to Commercial Reality published by The World Aquaculture Society. The most comprehensive source of information available, the book contains the proceedings of the fourth Open Ocean Aquaculture Symposium held in Canada.

Lisa Harlow, professor of psychology, received the Jacob Cohen Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Mentoring from the Measurement, Statistics and Evaluation division of the American Psychological Foundation at its annual meeting in Toronto in August.

For the fourth year in a row, Elizabeth Miles, assistant professor of English, has earned national recognition. She wrote a chapter in Coming of Age: The Advanced Writing Curriculum, which recently received the Council of Writing Program Administrators award for Best Book 2000-2001. Among the book’s editors were URI English Department faculty members Linda Shamoon and Robert Schwegler. Previously, Miles was the recipient of the award for Best Article 1999-2000 from the same group, as well as Best Article 2001 and Outstanding Dissertation 2000 from the Conference on College Composition and Communication.
