Building the budget

Each year, like other multi-million dollar entities, the University of Rhode Island prepares for and participates in a long-term process to establish its annual budget. Here's a snapshot of the many steps undertaken to build a balanced budget with which to manage the institution and gain the approvals needed from various levels of state government.

What's the total budget?

$365 million*

Where do the funds come from?

Tuition and student fees (26 percent)

State aid (23 percent)

Research funding (14 percent)

External scholarships and loans (14 percent)

R.I. capital fund (6.6 percent)

Auxiliary/enterprise funds (12 percent)

Other (sales and services, etc.) about 4.4 percent.

Where does it go?

Personnel services (50 percent)

Utilities (3 percent)

Operating supplies and expenses (20 percent)

Scholarships, grants, and loans (20 percent)

Capital (7 percent)
