Kudos Naomi J. Sobel has been appointed the University's new Jewish chaplain. Sobel has extensive experience working with youth, including being associate director of the Camp Interlaken Jewish Community Center, assistant regional director of the Wisconsin Region B'Nai B'rith youth organization, and division head and counselor of Camp Ramah in New England. Sobel is a member of the Association of Jewish Center Professionals and works with various boards and divisions of the Center.
Andrew Winters, an assistant director of Housing and Residential Life for residence education for the past seven years, was recently appointed as an assistant to the vice president for student affairs. Winters will head programs and services for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons. The one-year appointment was made by interim Vice President Thomas R. Dougan. During his tenure at URI, Winters has developed educational programs for Residential Life, and has worked with many departments on diversity initiatives. In honor of his work, he received the URI Multicultural Center Award for Staff and Administrative Excellence last year. Prior to joining the University, Winters worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champagne in both its housing division and as a special assistant to the associate chancellor from 1990 to 1993. He earned his B.S. in education from West Chester University in Penn. and his M.S. in education and psychology from Marywood College in Scranton.
