Tres Vidas, St. Petersburg Quartet highlight Great PerformancesThe URI Great Performances Series welcomes the Rhode Island premiere of Tres Vidas (Three Lives) on Oct.16 and the St. Petersburg Quartet on Nov.16. Both events begin at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall.
Tres Vidas is a musical theatre piece based on the lives of three legendary Latin American women: renowned Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Salvadoran peasant activist Rufina Amaya, and Argentine poet Alfonsina Storni.
Broadway and television actress, Georgina Corbo, will play the role of all three women. Corbo will be accompanied by the Florida-based Core Ensemble performing both popular and folkloric music from nine Latin composers. The script is the work of Chilean scholar and award-winning writer, Marjorie Agosin, a professor of Spanish literature at Wellesley College.
“The show is absolutely fantastic,” says Roxana Tourigny, coordinator of URI Great Performances. “The three monologues are very distinct, while the music is both inspiring and educational.”
Tres Vidas includes images from Kahlo’s dramatic work, passages from Amaya’s testimony about the army massacre of her village, and excerpts from Storni’s feminist poetry.
The Grammy nominated St. Petersburg Quartet will perform Beethoven’s Op. 59 No.1, Dnadarejshvili and Ravel quartets. The quartet was founded in 1985 by graduates of the Leningrad Conservatory. They won first place in the International Competition of Chamber Ensembles and have participated in hundreds of concerts at many of North America, Europe, and Asia’s most prestigious series’ and festivals.
Tickets for both performances are $15 for general admission; $12 for URI staff, faculty and senior citizens; and $5 for students. For more information call 874-2627.
