Also in October is a performance by the URI Symphony Orchestra on Oct. 16 at 8 p.m., and by the URI Wind Ensemble and Concert Band on Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. For more information about these concerts, call the Music Department at 401-874-2431

Great Performances

The DaPonte String Quartet with guest pianist Manabu Takasawa continues the Great Performances series on Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. From their home base in mid-coast Maine, the quartet has built a national and international reputation. They tour widely, but they also remain dedicated to presenting classical music in rural settings to children and adults with otherwise limited opportunity to hear chamber music. The members are graduates of The Julliard School and The Peabody Conservatory and have been playing together since 1991. Takasawa is a URI assistant professor of music. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $12 for faculty, staff and senior citizens, and $5 for students and children. For more information call 401-874-2627.

Fine Arts Center Galleries

The Corridor Gallery opens a photography exhibit by Lupita Murillo Tinnen on Oct. 5 featuring images of women in a Mexican immigrant community in Fort Worth, Texas, where the artist was born and raised. As Tinnen explained, “The primary focus is on women and the way in which their homes reflect their blending of two cultures.” Tinnen portrays powerful Mexican immigrant women who create new lives in the U.S. but visibly and tangibly import traditions and customs of their former domestic lives.

“Abstraction, Pure and Impure” is a focused group exhibition of non-representational art in the Main Gallery from Oct. 12 to Dec. 8. Curated by Galleries Director Judith Tolnick, this exhibition is the latest installment to identify and treat a vital contemporary current, the resurgence of non-representational painting that frequently comments wittily on modernist exemplars. Seven contemporary artists are featured. A reception will be held Oct. 17 at 2 p.m.
