KudosLisa Harlow, professor of psychology, was elected president of Division 5 of the American Psychological Association. Division 5 focuses on evaluation, measurement, and statistics.
Mary Cappello, professor of English, is this year’s co-winner of The Bechtel Prize for Educating the Imagination for her lecture on the question of whether creative writing can be taught. Offered by the Teachers and Writers Collaborative in New York, the prize comes with a $3,500 honorarium and publication in a special issue of Teachers and Writers Magazine.
Jennifer Allen has been named assistant dean of student affairs for URI’s College of Arts and Sciences. Allen has more than seven years of higher education experience in academic affairs and student life. Most recently, she served as an academic advisor at Salve Regina University.
Mercedes Rivero-Hudec, associate professor of chemical engineering, has been named associate dean for students and diversity in the College of Engineering, while Otto Gregory, professor of chemical engineering, has been named associate dean for graduate studies and research in the college.
Judy Beckman, professor of accounting, has been selected an American Council on Education Fellow for the 2004-2005 academic year. She will serve her fellowship at the University of Vermont. The ACE Fellowship program is the premier leadership development program for higher education in the country.
Dana Neugent, Jon Foley and graduate student Michael Stevenson, all of the URI Multimedia Production Group at the Feinstein Providence Campus, received top awards from Cox Communications New England for its 30-minute program “Outside the Box: Non-Traditional Learning at URI.” The program won the awards for Best Educational Program and Best Public Access Program of 2003.
Marcia Marker Feld, professor of community planning and director of the Urban Field Center at the Feinstein Providence Campus, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Campus-Community Partnerships by the Office of University Partnerships at the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development. The award cited Feld’s pioneering efforts to “create partnerships with community groups, school districts, public housing and local governments for the collaborative development of a high quality of life in every neighborhood.”
Bruce Hamilton, director of the URI Memorial Union/Student Involvement and Center for Student Leadership Development, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Association of College Unions International. This is the highest award given by the association in recognition of an individual’s outstanding service.
