Vote Yes 4 URI on Nov. 7

On Nov. 7, Rhode Island voters will be asked to vote "yes" for higher education by approving $36,950,000 in general obligation bonds for renovation of the residence halls at the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College (RIC), and creation of a satellite campus in Newport County for the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI).

Voting Yes on 4 will provide $22 million to support URI's $64 million residence hall project to completely renovate 14 residence halls at a rate of two each year over the next eight years. The University's Department of Housing and Residential Life has funded Phase I of the project with: $22 million, including $20 million from a 30-year Rhode Island Health and Education Building Corporation bond, $2 million from other sources; and $20 million from the Rhode Island Capital Funds Program.

As funding is sought through Bond referendum #4 for the second phase of this project, the University is preparing for a grand opening of Barlow Hall, the first of the residence halls to be renovated, and the first in the URI "Freshman Village."

"Providing facilities that respond to rising parent and student expectations is critical to the future of on-campus living for our students," said URI President Robert L. Carothers. "We're very appreciative of the support for this project from Governor Lincoln Almond, the General Assembly, the Board of Governors for Higher Education, and ultimately the voters of the State of Rhode Island."

Voting Yes on 4 will also provide $10.9 million for construction of a Newport County campus for CCRI and $4 million for residence hall renovations at RIC.
