ViolenceConf picture

A Peaceful Summer: Andrew Young, (left) a top aide to Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement and a leader of the nonviolence movement, autographs a book for Jonathan Lewis, a URI graduate student, during the International Conference for Nonviolence in August. Young delivered the keynote address that opened the Conference and stayed during various proceedings.

Bernard LaFayette and his newest peace crusaders take a break during the Hasbro Peace Camp for children held this summer at the International Nonviolence Conference. The children, part of the first peace camp in the conference, participated in activities such as song writing, marionette making, story telling, drumming, and non-competitive games. They also received nonviolence training by fifth graders at Wakefield Elementary School, who were trained along with their parents in Kingian nonviolence.

Worldly Games. Early this summer, the University's Kingston Campus was host to more than 2,000 scholar-athletes from 151 countries and all 50 U.S. states and about 1,000 volunteers, coaches, instructors, athletic trainers, and others attending the third World Scholar-Athlete Games. Held every four years since 1993, the event was conceived and is managed by the Institute for International Sport, which is located at URI.

Floundering Around: There was nothing fishy about Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) Biological Oceanographer Jennifer Specker's talk on "Why Are Flounder Flat?: Unraveling the Mysteries of Metamorphosis" at the Annual Summer Lecture in Oceanography at the Naval War College in Newport. Specker's multimedia presentation (including one giant flounder) examined the changes that flounder go through from birth to adult.

Two young students fell hook, line and sinker for oceanographic topics as they looked over displays and books before hearing Oceanographer Jennifer Specker's talk about the mysteries of a flounder's metamorphosis during the annual summer lecture in Oceanography.

Insidious Device: Congressmen Patrick Kennedy, left, and James Langevin talk with Associate Chemistry Professor Jimmie Oxley about research being done at URI to develop land mine detection technology. Here, she shows the congressmen an example of a mine and how it works. Oxley, co-director of the URI Forensic Science Partnership, made a presentation as part of a tour of the Rhode Island State Crime Laboratory at URI.

Boatride picture

Pioneer Alumni Campers: Alumni and their families were treated to a ride aboard the Cap'n Bert, the 51-foot research vessel captained by Tom Plunkett as part of the first-ever Alumni Family Camp program held at the University in July. The hands-on tour gave children a chance to work with the research crew, while parents and others enjoyed a day on the Bay.

Learning Keys to Success: Maram Hallak (standing) of URI's Urban Field Center at the Providence Campus helps students Veronica and Brent with questions about their Websites. The high school students were hired as "research assistants" and participated in a special intensive summer program to build their academic and job readiness. The successful program, which "graduated" 22 out of 25 students who enrolled, was funded by the federal Workforce Investment Act. The program targets ninth and tenth grade students from low income families who are behind grade level and at risk for dropping out of school.
