Art of Cuba highlights Fine Arts offerings

Galleries

Cuba is the theme in the Fine Arts Center Galleries in September as two separate exhibits feature art about that Caribbean country. The Corridor Gallery exhibit, “Si, Cuba! Color Photographs of Cuba,” depicts an insider’s view of Havana by Los Angeles artist Alex Pitt. Running Sept. 1-30, the exhibit reveals the Havana seldom seen by outsiders.

From Sept. 5 to 30, the Main Gallery reopens an exhibit first shown in July of a sculptural installation by Ana Flores entitled “Cuba Journal.” Works in this exhibit are made from found and recycled materials as a tribute to the resourcefulness of Flores’ native Cuba. The artist will lead a tour of the exhibit Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m.

A closing reception for the two Cuba-themed exhibits will be held Sept. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. and will include traditional Afro-Cuban music by Gloria Lopez Prieto.

Opening Sept. 16 in the Photography Gallery is “Excess: Food as Metaphor and Other Strategies of Consumption,” a group exhibit complementing the Fall 2004 Honors Colloquium, “Food and Human Rights: Hunger and Social Policy.”

Great Performances

The Snappy Dance Theater kicks off the 2004-2005 Great Performances series on Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. Founded in 1997, this collaborative ensemble celebrates diverse movement backgrounds to create performances that have universal significance and appeal, taking the audience on an emotional journey that is humorous, thought-provoking and filled with surprises. The Boston Herald says Snappy Dance has “an extremely compelling style that is intelligent without being high-minded and often ironically absurd.” Tickets are $20 for the general public, $15 for faculty, staff and senior citizens, and $5 for students and children. For more information call 401-874-2627. Sponsored by the New England Foundation for the Arts.

Music

The first performance in the University Artist Series features a piano recital by Slawomir Dobrzanski on Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. Winner of many national and international awards, Dobrzanski has performed recitals in Poland, Germany, Switzerland, and throughout the U.S., and he was featured soloist with the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw, Poland. Dobrzanski has made several solo and chamber music recordings for Polish Radio and Polish Television. For more information about this and other Department of Music events, call 401-874-2431.
