In Memoriam

Charles Armstrong, 64, a professor in the College of Business Administration for 30 years, died at home in Jamestown on March 3. Winner of the National Dissertation Contest in 1974, Armstrong was the author of Basic Statistics in Business and Economics, and served as president of Concerts on the Island in Newport.

Linda Blood, 64, assistant professor emeritus of human development and family studies, died at home in Narragansett on May 20. Her research interests focused on adolescents, runaway children and gender differences related to future career expectations.

Violet Daniel, 74, an adjunct professor of history at the Providence Campus, died June 20 in Warwick. A retired history teacher at North Kingstown High School, she was the wife of the late Charles Daniel, the long-time URI history professor who was considered by many the most popular teacher on campus.

Carl Slader, 98, a retired professor of physical education, died in North Kingstown on July 15. A member of the Governor’s Conference on Fire Prevention and the Governor’s Conference on Industrial Safety, Slader also served on the faculty of the American Red Cross National Aquatics School. He was past president of the R.I. Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and was honored by the Red Cross for outstanding achievements in aquatics.

Robert Sorlien, 87, a professor emeritus of English, died Aug. 2 at home in West Kingston. An authority on the English Renaissance and on 17th century poet John Donne, he taught at URI for 40 years and also at the Naval War College in Newport for 27 years. He was inducted into the URI Hall of Fame in 1986 and the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame in 2000. An advocate of fitness and athletic competition for all ages, he won many medals competing in national and international Master’s track and field events.

Janet Kulberg, 71, a retired professor of psychology and associate devan of the graduate school, died August 11. A resident of Wakefield, she studied school readiness, school learning styles, and developmental disabilities. She was the chairperson of the Exceptional Child Research Institute at the University of Maine.
