Gifting Through Bequests

Two years ago Peter Madden ’61 and his wife, Mary Christian, decided to direct a percentage of their estate to support future endowments at their undergraduate institutions. Peter established an endowment here at URI in honor of his parents to eventually provide scholarships to “undergraduate students who are in the first generation of their immediate families to attend college.”

“Mary and I are indebted to our college educations. We were both working class kids growing up and the first generation of our own families to go to college.” They both went on to teaching careers in the Rhode Island public school systems and later entered second careers, Peter in law practice and Mary in high school administration.

Last fall Peter decided to begin funding the Edward E. & Louise E. Madden Endowment at URI with a current multi-year pledge in addition to his future estate provision. The Maddens’ three sons are now grown and are all college graduates, including Steven ’00. “We have been very fortunate through our lives and owe everything we have to our schools. We knew we could start helping students today.”

Bequest intentions to URI may be made through wills and trusts and may be directed to fund any program or college or designated to support one or more areas of interest, such as endowed scholarships, fellowships, or faculty chairs.
