It wasn’t until 1929 when Rhode Island State College played Connecticut in football that the Ram made its first official appearance. The Battering Ram, a live mascot, was not very cooperative. Over the years, several male sheep draped in Rhody Blue and students dressed in Ram costumes have represented alumni, students, and staff. And while the name has changed from Battering Ram to Ramses to Rhody the Ram, the mascot has always been essential to URI spirit. Now URI is seeking your help in assisting the devoted student volunteers who serve as Rhody at athletic events, campus rallies, and off-campus functions. A scholarship endowment with an initial goal of $10,000 has been established to assist students in their role as Rhody. Checks and securities should be made payable to URI/Rhody Ram and sent to: Rhody Ram, Attn. Sarah HowardAthletic DevelopmentDavis Hall, 10 Lippitt RoadKingston, R.I. 02881. For more information, call Sarah Howard at 401-874-7536.
