Women’s Rowing

On April 9, 2005, the varsity women’s eight, rowing in a brand new shell later christened the Amy Janes Bare ’35, topped Boston College to win the first Resolute Cup. This was the first time since rowing was elevated to varsity status in 1997 that the varsity eight defeated Boston College over 2000 meters.

Following the races, which were held on the team’s home waters of Narrow River, the two new Resolute Eights, the Amy Janes Bare ’35 and the John E. Janes, were dedicated at the Campanella Rowing Center in North Kingstown, R.I.

These were the third and fourth racing shells to be acquired through the help of the Amy Janes Bare ’35 Charitable Fund.

The boats were a gift in kind presented to the URI Foundation in 2003 by the family of Amy Janes Bare. The late Amy Janes Bare and John E. Janes were honored at the dedication along with Bernie Taradash, executor of the Amy Janes Bare Charitable Fund. Misha Jounkowsky, owner of Resolute Racing Shells of Bristol, R.I., and sponsor of the Resolute Cup, was also recognized for his contributions to the sport.

Speakers at the event included Rick Gherst, head men’s rowing coach; Julia Chilicki-Beasley ’94, head women’s rowing coach; and Tom McElroy, director of athletics.

Stailing Receives a Rainville Leadership Award

On April 13 senior women’s basketball player Katie Stailing was selected as one of the winners of the 2005 A. Robert Rainville Student Leadership Awards. Rainville Awards winners are nominated by students, staff, and faculty with final selections made by an awards committee.

Stailing, a four-year standout and three-year starter on the women’s basketball team, earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism at this year’s Commencement.

A native of West Bath, Maine, Stailing was a peer advocate for the URI Violence Prevention Program, volunteering many hours in helping those in need of support. She has served as a mentor for the URI 101 - 1st Year Success Course and is a member of both the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and RAM Choices, a student organization dedicated to reducing the risk of alcohol-related problems amongst the student body.

As an orientation leader, Stailing assisted first-year students in making a smooth transition from high school to life on a college campus. She has also volunteered at St. Patrick’s Meal Kitchen, at the Special Olympics, and for the Rhody Reads program.

Stailing is the third straight Rhody athlete to win a Rainville Award and the fourth since 2001. Softball player Kirsten Olson won the award in 2003, men’s soccer player Michael Charles took the honor in 2003, and women’s track & field competitor Jennifer Wanat received the award in 2001.
