Visual Identity Elements

The University of Rhode Island’s Visual Identity includes a University wordmark, the Green Hall logo, the University seal, and the Ram logo. The value of these elements is realized only when they are used throughout the communications program and when design integrity is protected through exact specifications and consistent application.

Any use of these elements except as described in these guidelines must be approved in advance by the University Publications Office at 401-874-2075.

University Wordmark

Designed as a unifying graphic device, the University wordmark consists of the stacked words “University of” and “Rhode Island,” with the latter emphasized to clearly identify the institution as the state university. The University wordmark is set in a customized version of the Adobe Minion typeface with “University of” in all capital letters and “Rhode Island” in initial caps and lower case.

Use: The University wordmark should be used with the Green Hall logo whenever it is appropriate to visually identify the University. The University wordmark and Green Hall logo must appear on either the front or back of all publications and printed materials, all titles for films, videotapes, and slide presentations.

Under extremely limited circumstances, the University wordmark may be used alone or with the University seal. Contact the University Publications Office at 401-874-2075 for permission.

The Green Hall Logo

Symbolizing one of the University’s landmark historic buildings, the Green Hall logo was developed for use throughout the Centennial Celebration in 1992. After completion of the Centennial year, the Green Hall logo was revised and adopted as the University’s logo.

Use: Green Hall remains central to the University’s identity and should be used with the University wordmark by all colleges, schools, divisions, departments, programs, and offices as their primary identifier. Green Hall should never be used alone without the University wordmark or reproduced in sizes smaller than one inch.

The University Seal

The University seal consists of a stylized anchor and the state motto “Hope” with “University of Rhode Island” and “1892,” the year of founding (then Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts), following the contour of the circle separated by two bullets.

The current University seal is a 1977 revision of the 1951 seal adopted when, by act of the General Assembly, Rhode Island State College officially changed its name to the University of Rhode Island.

Use: The University seal should be used for documents of a formal, official nature, including diplomas, certificates, commencement materials, application materials, and for merchandising or promotional items that reflect the University’s history and tradition.

The Ram Logo

The Ram mascot was adopted in 1923 by then Rhode Island State College, reflecting the University’s roots as an agricultural college. The Ram logo is a stylized representation of the University mascot revised in 1993 by the University’s Department of Athletics. The Ram logo is a contemporary view of the Ram’s head facing right, showing partial facial features as well as the horn.

Use: The Ram logo is used to identify all sports at the University. Please contact the Athletics Department at 401-874-2401 for a copy of their Logo Application & Usage Manual.

Alternate & Secondary Logos

All colleges, schools, divisions, departments, programs, or offices should use the University wordmark with the Green Hall logo as their primary identifier. In order to present a positive, unified visual image of the University, the creation and use of alternate or secondary logos, e.g., college, department, or program logos is strongly discouraged.

Alternate Logos.
Units with significant external responsibilities or a high level of public visibility may request permission to use an alternate logo, rather than the Green Hall logo and University wordmark, as their primary identifier. Examples of already existing and approved alternate logos include, but are not limited to: the Ram logo for Athletics, the URI Foundation logo, and the W. Alton Jones Campus logo. Alternate logos may be used or created only with the approval of the Vice President for University Advancement and the University Publications Office.

Secondary Logos. Secondary logos may be used in addition to the Green Hall logo and University wordmark, but should not generally appear on the same visible surface.

Examples of existing secondary logos include, but are not limited to: the IEP logo, the College of Engineering logo, and the College of Nursing logo. A College of Engineering brochure, for example, could include the Green Hall logo and wordmark on the front cover and the College of Engineering logo on the back cover.
